Economic Activity and Labour Force

ANALYSIS OF THE 2011 POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS

FEBRUARY 2015

This monograph provides in-depth analysis of the characteristics of economic activity and the labour force in the Cook islands, as captured in the 2011 population and housing census. It examines the main activities of the population, in particular, types of work people do, the education and training of the employed population and the participation of vulnerable groups in the labour force. It is one in a series of census monographs on topics where statistics and information are in high demand, the others being on gender, population and youth. This report provides new information and analysis to complement other monographs and the main report on the census, which was published in December 2012.

The labour force is vital part of any society, enabling hosueholds to generate income, contributing to national economic growth and empowering the population to use skills in productive activities. There are many types of work, both paid and unpaid, all providing a valuable contribution.
